Occupational Therapy Internship – Mobility Aid Department

The Occupational Therapy Internship is a 6-month, full-time program based at the Addis Guzo Center of Excellence in Lideta Subcity (Geja Sefer), Addis Ababa. Offered to Occupational Therapy graduates passionate about Assistive Technology and Mobility Aid Provision, the position focuses on mobility aid assessment, fitting, customization, maintenance, and repair. Working closely with skilled wheelchair technicians, the intern delivers hands-on technical care to empower individuals with physical disabilities while gaining specialized experience in Early Childhood Intervention and adult skills development.

Mobility Aid Assessment & Customization

• Conduct technical assessments, custom fitting, and modifications of mobility aids and assistive devices for patients.

• Assist in the maintenance, repair, and ongoing adjustment of wheelchairs and mobility equipment.

• Deliver targeted rehabilitation interventions focusing on Early Childhood Intervention and adult skills development.

Collaboration & Technical Execution

• Work closely with wheelchair technicians and multidisciplinary rehabilitation staff on a daily basis.

• Apply practical and mechanical skills to tailor assistive technologies to individual user needs.

• Support community-focused rehabilitation services aimed at improving accessibility and quality of life for individuals with physical disabilities.

• Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Rehabilitation Sciences, Community-Based Rehabilitation, or a related healthcare field.

• Practical or clinical training in occupational therapy, physical rehabilitation, or community-based rehabilitation.

• Prior technical, mechanical, or hands-on experience with tools or equipment modification is preferred.

• Strong technical and mechanical aptitude with a hands-on approach to problem-solving.

• Dedicated interest in specializing in Assistive Technology and Mobility Aid Provision.

• Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills to work effectively with wheelchair technicians and healthcare teams.

• Empathy and commitment to serving individuals with physical disabilities in underserved communities.
