Environmental Specialist

Job Summary

The World Bank is seeking an Environmental Specialist based in Addis Ababa to focus on environmental and social risk management, including health and safety, across Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Sudan. The specialist will implement the World Bank's environmental and social risk management policies, ensuring that all World Bank-supported investment projects meet high environmental, health, and safety standards while building and strengthening national systems and institutional capacity.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct environmental and social risk management due diligence of World Bank-financed operations, including preparing Environmental and Social Review Summaries and relevant PAD sections.
• Oversee compliance with World Bank Group EHS guidelines, IFC Performance Standards, and the Environmental and Social Framework (ESF) during project design, preparation, appraisal, and implementation.
• Guide clients and counterparts in preparing project documents such as ESCPs, LMPs, ESIAs, ESMPs, SEPs, and Project Implementation Manuals.
• Support timely and accurate disclosure procedures, public consultations, and specialized management plans like biodiversity, waste management, and occupational health and safety.
• Assist clients with incident and accident management, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and reporting.
• Organize and deliver technical training and capacity building on environmental, health, and safety risk management for national agencies and practitioners.

Qualifications

• Education: Advanced degree (PhD or Master’s) in environmental/natural sciences or environmental/civil engineering with technical training in topics like OHS, solid waste management, pollution prevention, and biodiversity.
• Experience: Minimum of 5 years of full-time, relevant professional experience in environmental management, including managing ESHS risks for large projects and applying World Bank Group ESF or similar frameworks.
• Languages: Fluency in English and Amharic, both oral and written.

• Technical Skills: Strong technical experience in managing environmental, social, health, and safety risks for large infrastructure projects like roads, dams, irrigation, power, and water systems.
